Wage Rate Increase 2023

The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) has handed down its decision to increase the Queensland minimum wage by 5.75% effective on and from 1 September 2023.

When does the wage rate increase occur?

The decision of the QIRC applies on and from 1 September 2023. Any work completed since 1 September 2023 therefore needs to be back-paid at the new rates, with all future payments being paid at the new rates (which includes monetary allowances).

Does the increase apply to all P&C employees?

Yes. All employees (OSHC, tuckshop, uniform shop, admin, swim club, etc.) employed by a P&C Association are employed under the Parents and Citizens Associations Award – State 2016 (Award).

P&Cs who employ staff need to comply with the obligations as set out in the Parents and Citizens Associations Award – State 2016 and the Industrial Relations Act 2016 (Qld).

Does the P&C have to backpay the increase difference to employees who were employed after 1 September 2023 but who have since left its employment?

Yes.

When should that occur?

As soon as possible.

How will any back payments be taxed?

Please consult with your accountant, bookkeeper or the ATO about the tax treatment of any relevant payments.

Who do I turn to if I have questions?

P&Cs Qld’s HR Support Service is the best place to turn to to seek advice about the minimum wage increase.
